Guilt-Induced Trekking

After indulging ourselves with a delicious feast after our cooking class, we decided that we really ought to get out and do some trekking. I was also interested in visiting hill-tribe villages to see what life is like in rural Laos. Different ethnic groups are distinguished by the altitude they live at. The Hmong are the highlanders who live near the mountain-tops, the main mid-land group near Luang Prabang is the Khmu, and the low-landers are the Lao.

It was quite a full day of trekking. The morning was all uphill, and my calves were burning by the time we reached the Hmong village for lunch. Then the afternoon was downhill for a long time, with some slippery slopes from leaves and loose dirt and sand requiring careful footing, which had my thigh and knee muscles trembling after a few hours. The scenery was beautiful and we really enjoyed the experience. But after about six hours trekking, we were more than happy to see our little pick-up truck to take us back to town.
