Talcott Tower Toot

On Sunday, the day after my mom's memorial service, most of our friends and family had gone home, but my uncle Eric from California was still with us. So we took him out for one of our favorite local hikes, up Talcott Mountain to the Heublein Tower, where they were celebrating the annual "Tower Toot."

On our way up to the top, we ran into a couple who had been at my mom's memorial service the previous day, friends from their ski club. What a lovely surprise to see familiar faces, faces who knew Mom. We chatted for a bit, then continued on up.

It had been a mostly cloudy day, but as we approached the ridge, the sun came sneaking out from behind the clouds and presented us with a gorgeous fall afternoon.
Poor California Eric, shivering in his borrowed jacket and hat, hiking in loafers not meant for such rough terrain. But he was a good sport, and here he is capturing the view with his beloved iPhone.

As we hung out by the tower, Elder insisted on a hair-tossing photo session, so I obliged:

Back on the ridge on the way down, the sun was getting lower in the sky and poking its rays through the clouds in a glorious skyscape.

It turned out to be a beautiful afternoon. And we ended the day with a delicious meal at the wonderfully named local restaurant, Abigail's.
